I really like that hat pattern! The cinch at the top is fabulous. Does the pattern you're using have graphs, or just line directions? Cables are really fun, I bet you'll like them - sort of the architectural element of knitting. And starting with kid's stuff is always nice - you get to use such fun colors and the foray can be a small one.
