Two Birds With One Stone

I need a project for November. My daughter needs a new hat. I've never knit cables before. Problem solved:

My November project is Sugar On Snow from the Fall 2006 Knitty. I'm going to try to make time to swatch in the next day or so.

That is a cute hat. I can't wait to see yours. I am still trying to finish my Odessa, I put it down several days ago and have yet to pick it back up. It's a great pattern, I guess I just think I am busy or something.

I really like that hat pattern! The cinch at the top is fabulous.
Does the pattern you're using have graphs, or just line directions?
Cables are really fun, I bet you'll like them - sort of the architectural element of knitting. And starting with kid's stuff is always nice - you get to use such fun colors and the foray can be a small one. I'd suggest checking out Barbara Walker's Third Treasury (http://www.amazon.com/Charted-Knitting-Designs-Treasury-Patterns/dp/0942018184/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1195234720&sr=8-1)
for more ideas . . .

Looks great! I love the vine that cinches it up.
