I've decided that my September DSN project is going to be dying yarn. Specifically, I am going to dye with Kool-Aid. I already have the materials; some of the first yarn I ever bought (and the first good yarn I ever bought) was cream-colored DK-weight baby alpaca for a hat. The hat came out gigantic because I didn't gauge swatch (I learned that lesson really early-- and dramatically, because the hat was big enough to fit Buckwheat.) Anyway, I frogged the yarn and I thought it would be fun to dye it with grape Kool-Aid and knit it into something else.
So I bought some Kool-Aid, wound the yarn into hanks, and there it has been sitting-- for over three years now. I guess it's about time to try the Kool-Aid dying, especially since now I would be kind of skeptical about drinking the Kool-Aid.
Because I have so many other projects to get done right now, including one for pay, I picked this challenge specifically so it would be new, but quick. I don't have to knit the yarn up this month, just dye it. I'm planning on doing it this weekend so I can get ahead of the game.

The Kool-Aid dying is fun. I made a purse out of Kool-Aid dyed yarn for my 8-year-old niece, she thought it was cool that I used Kool-Aid to make her purse.
I have never done this, but it looks like real fun! Like many other cool things, we can not buy Kool-Aid in Norway either. So back to the online shopping....I am looking forward to see your finished yarn!
Sounds great!!! Have not yet ventured to dye anything.
Hobbygasa... if you ever enter an online swap you should ask your swap partner to send you some Koolaid!!!
This is what I'm gonna do for my September project, too! I'm looking forward to seeing yours, and any tips and hints would be great!!
I ordered two skeins from Knit Picks, one in sock weight and one in lace weight. I want to the sock yarn in maybe varigated colors and I want a nice sort of mossy green for the lace wt. Should be fun if I don't screw up!
Hobbygasa: you definitely need to get in a swap and ask someone to send you some Kool Aid. It's cheap! In fact, it's also lightweight, so if you email me I will send you my leftover Kool-Aid, as long as it still works OK for my dye project (it should!) Write to me at stitchaywoman@gmail.com and we'll work it out.
Maybe I should make it clear: these are little packets of powdered drink mix. I'm not going to send you my leftover liquid Kool-Aid. :-)
